Canelo Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) will make his return to the 154-pound division to take on WBO super welterweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) on Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
It will be Alvarez’s first fight back at 154 pounds since he decimated James Kirkland in Minute Maid Park in Houston in May 2015. Alvarez’s last two fights were at middleweight for the WBC belt, but both were fought at catchweights below the 160-pound limit.
For Smith, this will be the biggest fight of his career. The WBO champion has never faced a top 10 super welterweight and is ranked as the No. 7 154-pounder by FightNews. Alvarez is the heavy favorite (-1200 to win, Smith +700) to claim the belt on Saturday night.
